Fall of Ocean : Ocean Acidification

Ocean acidification is the most ignored issue on climate changes. It is the biggest rising issue over all issues. "New study shows that sea are acidifying ten time faster than last hundreds of year ago. Study also conclude that current changes in Ocean chemistry due to the burning of fossil fuels may portend a new wave of die-off".The marine scientist and the International program on the State of the Ocean(IPSO) report states.

Ocean Acidification :

Ocean absorb the CO2 from atmosphere and this rate has been increased by the human or due to human-reaction.It's increasing the acidity of Sea water. This process is known as the Ocean Acidification.
More CO2 in atmosphere,More absorption : Increasing the Ocean acidity.
Since starting the Industrial revaluation the % of the CO2 has increased and the addition of so much carbon has altered the chemistry of the Ocean water. The water have become  more acidic since the Industrial revolution.

What does it mean?

It is not mean that the Sea water is acidic.it's still basic. Ph scale is used to measure the acidity or basicity of the water. The normal Ph of Ocean water surface is 8.0 to 8.3 that mean it is basic but it's continuously falling down and being less basic or more acidic. This is what we mean to Ocean acidification.

Chemistry Behind it?

The term Ocean acidification refers to moving the Ph towards the acidic end because the absorbed CO2 , a weak acid , results in increased H+,  lowering the Ph of sea-water.The Ocean naturally absorb huge quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which sets off a chemical reaction in seawater. This reaction includes conversion of calcium carbonate, which helps control Ph levels. More CO2 in the atmosphere means more dissolving in the Ocean, causing carbonate concentration to drop, along with Ph.

What to we worry about:-

Is the Ocean acidification is dangerous to us or should we take it seriously?
then answer would be YES.But not now ,On the upcoming time it would the
most thinkable issue around the world among the all environmental issues.
There are some issues on which we should think about:

  • Increase the Ocean acidity, decrease the capacity to absorb the CO-2. and the increase of CO-2 the major key of climate change. So rising effects are like Global warming, Ozone depletion ,  increasing the cracking of Glacier Ice.
  • Change in the carbonate chemistry of Ocean prevent coral reef growth within decades.
  • The far-reaching implication of Ocean acidification are: a threatened food web, diminished biodiversity and disrupted carbon cycling.
  • Other effects to see: increase Global warming,Deoxygenation of oceanic,Ozone depletion, overfishing, pollution.
  • For Ocean species it is more difficult to build their shells and skeleton which make them more stable and protect from any damage.
  • Most of Ocean species are negatively effected by the acidification.
  • Reproductive failure of young corals which is already highly stressed( studies shows).
  • Sea is shielding us from the worst effect of CO2 by absorbing the excess CO2 from environment. but there would be a limit . if we'll not care about this rising issue then both Excess CO2 and acidic ocean will be a major problem.
  • Coral reefs, for instance, are suffering from the higher temperatures and the effects of acidification whilst(as well as)  also being weakened by bad fishing practices, pollution, siltation and toxic algal blooms.
  • There is no recycle-bin for earth.we can't throw things away. it's a closed system. Everything is in a cycle. Every gram of chemical and part of electronics  which is manufactured , is affecting environment in its process of making and recycling.
  • We hope Ocean won't change in A CO2 emitter from a CO2 sink because of human kindness.
  • There is another problem that dilute the water will lower the Ph. and melting glaciers diluting the ocean.
